Built environment

Decisions made about building and infrastructure design today have repercussions far into the future. It is important to factor climate change into all aspects of construction, from land use planning to the positioning, construction, and life-cycle management of buildings, in order to mitigate negative effects. Moreover, increasing rainfall damages many sites of cultural importance, which makes maintenance more challenging. Climate change also affects road, sea, and air transport. The biggest changes in transport are associated with weather conditions and road maintenance in the winter. Extreme weather phenomena, such as rainstorms and snowstorms, also complicate road and rail transport, for example. On the other hand, the cycling season becomes longer with climate change.
